Why You Shouldn't Build a Brand Before You Know What You're Selling

Had a conversation with a client who wanted to rebrand her affiliate business.

She was excited and ready to invest—

but when I asked what products she planned to sell…

she didn’t know yet.

That’s when I told her to hold off.

You can’t build a brand before you know what you’re offering.

Everything—your audience, your tone, your visuals—depends on what you’re selling and why.

When I asked what colors she was drawn to, she wasn’t sure.

When I asked what brands she liked, she hadn’t really thought about it.

So I gave her something simple to start with: just notice.

Look at all kinds of brands—online, in stores, on social media—and pay attention to what catches your eye.

Is it the color scheme?

The feeling you get when you read their copy or see their website or ad?

What emotions do those colors give you?

Screenshot or pin everything that pulls you in.

Later, we’ll look at it all and start to find patterns—clues about what resonates with her naturally.

That’s where real branding starts.

Not with a logo. Not with a mood board. But with awareness.

Your brand is an extension of who you are—

what you love, what you stand for,

and how you want others to feel in your presence.
